The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 And thou art an indweller of this city - 2 by the begetter, and that he begot, 3 We created the human in fatigue. 4 Does he think that no one can overpower him? 5 He boasts, "I have spent wealth abundant!" 6 Thinks he that none sees him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?- 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And did We not guide him to the two elevated things? 10 Yet he has not assaulted the steep; 11 And what have you understood, what the valley is! 12 (It is) the setting free of a slave, 13 or the feeding in times of famine 14 an orphaned relative 15 Or to a Miskin (poor) afflicted with misery. 16 so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful. 17 Those are the companions of the right. 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 Over them will be fire closed in. 20
