The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ I swear by this city (Mecca) – 1 For you (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) are in this city. 2 by the begetter, and that he begot, 3 We created the human in fatigue. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not appointed to him two eyes, 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 And did We not show him the two highroads (of good and evil)? 10 But he would not try to ascend the steep uphill road... 11 Would that you knew what Aqaba is! 12 It is the setting free of a slave 13 Or feeding on a day of severe hunger 14 An orphan near of kin, 15 Or of a homeless needy person! 16 And moreover to be of those who accepted faith, and who urged patience to one another and who urged graciousness to one another. 17 Those are the companions of the right. 18 whereas those who are bent on denying the truth of Our messages - they are such as have lost themselves in evil, 19 [with] fire closing in upon them. 20
