Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the dawn 1 and ten nights (of pilgrimage or the last ten days of Ramadan), 2 The multiple and the one, 3 And by oath of the night when it recedes 4 Is there not an evidence in this for those who have sense? 5 Did you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) not see (thought) how your Lord dealt with 'Ad (people)? 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 the like of whom has never been reared in all the land? 8 and with [the tribe of] Thamud, who hollowed out rocks in the valley? 9 And with Pharaoh, firm of might, 10 All of them committed excesses in their lands, 11 and brought about great corruption therein: 12 Therefore thy Lord poured on them the disaster of His punishment. 13 your Lord keeps an eye on (all evil-doing people). 14 Now, as for man, when his Lord trieth him, giving him honour and gifts, then saith he, (puffed up), "My Lord hath honoured me." 15 But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me." 16 No indeed; but you honour not the orphan, 17 or urge one another to feed the destitute? 18 And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether, 19 And you love wealth with exceeding love. 20 Nay! when the earth is made to crumble to pieces, 21 and when your Lord appears with rows upon rows of angels, 22 On that day, hell will be brought closer and the human being will come to his senses, but this will be of no avail to him. 23 He will say: "Oh, would that I had provided beforehand for my life [to come]!" 24 None can punish as He will punish on that day, 25 And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers]. 26 [To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul, 27 return to your Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing. 28 enter, then, together with My [other true] servants 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
