The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 From Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways 3 The angels and Jibreel, ascend towards Him – the punishment will befall on a day which spans fifty thousand years. 4 So be thou patient with a sweet patience; 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 And We behold it nigh. 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 And his spouse and his brother. 12 and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 that will strip off the scalp. 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. 18 ۞ Indeed man is created very impatient, greedy. 19 When evil touches him, impatient, 20 And refraining, when good reaches him. 21 save those that pray 22 Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord - 27 Verily! The torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure, 28 and those who guard their private parts, 29 Are free of blame, 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, 32 And those who stand by their testimony 33 and who take due care of their Prayer: 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
