The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 142 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 "Will ye be left secure, in (the enjoyment of) all that ye have here? 146 In gardens and fountains, 147 And green crops (fields etc.) and date-palms with soft spadix. 148 And dwellings hewed out of mountains ingeniously? 149 Therefor keep your duty to Allah and obey me, 150 do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses, 151 Who spread corruption in the earth, and reform not. 152 They said, “You are under a magic spell.” 153 "You are but a human being like us. Then bring us a sign if you are of the truthful." 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 And touch her not with ill lest there come on you the retribution of an awful day. 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 So the retribution came on them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Your Lord, He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
