Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the break of Day 1 By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah). 2 By the even and odd (contrasted); 3 and by the passing night, 4 is there not in this strong evidence for a man of sense? 5 Did you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) not see (thought) how your Lord dealt with 'Ad (people)? 6 With many-columned Iram, 7 The like of whom were never created in the realm; 8 And with Thamud who carved rocks in the valley; 9 And with Pharaoh of the tent pegs 10 Who (all) were rebellious (to Allah) in these lands, 11 And increased therein the corruption. 12 So your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment. 13 Indeed, your Lord is in observation. 14 As for the human being, when his Lord tests him, honors him, and grants him bounty, he says, "God has honored me". 15 but when He tests him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Lord has disgraced me." 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 And urge not on the feeding of AlMiskin (the poor)! 18 and you greedily devour the inheritance of the weak, 19 and you love wealth with boundless love! 20 Most certainly – when the earth is smashed and blown to bits. 21 and [the majesty of] thy Sustainer stands revealed, as well as [the true nature of] the angels; rank upon rank? 22 And when hell is brought that day – on that day will man reflect, but where is the time now to think? 23 He will say: 'Would that I had forwarded (good works) for my life!' 24 So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment, 25 And no one binds like He does! 26 O the contented soul! 27 Return thou unto thy Sustainer, well-pleased [and] pleasing [Him]: 28 Join My servants. 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
