The Inevitable (Al-Waaqe'ah)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ WHEN THAT which must come to pass [at last] comes to pass, 1 there is no denying its coming 2 (a calamitous Event) that shall turn things upside down: 3 When the earth is shaken up convulsively, 4 And the mountains shall be crumbled to atoms, 5 becoming scattered dust, 6 And you (all) will be in three kinds (i.e. separate groups). 7 (First) those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand? 8 Companions of the Left, what are the Companions of the Left? 9 and the Outstrippers: the Outstrippers 10 These will be those Nearest to Allah: 11 In Gardens of Delight. 12 a host of the ancients 13 and a few from later times. 14 on lavish couches 15 Reclining on them, facing each other. 16 Surrounded by immortal boys. 17 With goblets and ewers and a cup of pure drink; 18 Wherefrom they get no aching of the head nor any madness, 19 And such fruits as they fancy, 20 and the meat of any bird that they may desire; 21 They will have maidens with large, lovely black and white eyes, 22 Like pearls within their shells, 23 All this shall be theirs as a reward for their deeds. 24 They will not hear any unnecessary or sinful talk 25 Except the word peace, peace. 26 And those on the right – how (fortunate) are those on the right! 27 They will be in (the shade) of thornless lote 28 And clusters of banana plants. 29 And extended shade, 30 and outpoured waters, 31 And fruits numberless, 32 never-ending and unforbidden. 33 And on couches or thrones, raised high. 34 and their spouses We shall have brought them into being afresh, 35 And made them virgin - pure (and undefiled), - 36 Loving, equals in age, 37 All this will be for the People on the Right; 38
