The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the setting star, 1 This fellow-man of yours has not gone astray, nor is he deluded, 2 He does not speak out of his own desires. 3 It is a revelations which has been revealed to him 4 The Lord of Mighty Power has taught him, 5 by the great mighty one (Gabriel), 6 And reached the highest pinnacle. 7 Then he drew near, then he bowed 8 And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer; 9 so (Allah) revealed to His worshiper (Gabriel) that which he revealed (to Prophet Muhammad). 10 The [servant's] heart did not give the lie to what he saw: 11 will you, then, contend with him as to what he saw? 12 And indeed he did see the Spectacle again. 13 By the lote-tree of the utmost boundary, 14 Close to which is the Garden of Tranquility, 15 Behold, the Lote-tree was shrouded (in mystery unspeakable!) 16 The sight did not shift, nor did it cross the limits. 17 For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest! 18 Have you considered Lat and 'Uzza, 19 and Manat the third, the other? 20 What! for you the males and for Him the females! 21 That indeed is an unfair division -- 22 These [allegedly divine beings] are nothing but empty names which you have invented - you and your forefathers - [and] for which God has bestowed no warrant from on high. They [who worship them] follow nothing but surmise and their own wishful thinking - although right guidance has now indeed come unto them from their Sustainer. 23 Shall man have whatever he craves? 24 And to God belongs the First and the Last. 25
