The great ones among Pharaoh's people said: "Verily, this is indeed a sorcerer of great knowledge, 109 He intends to turn you out of your land. What counsel do you then give? 110 They answered: "Let him and his brother wait awhile, and send unto all cities heralds 111 To bring each knowing wizard unto thee. 112 And the wizards came to Pharaoh, saying: Surely there will be a reward for us if we are victors. 113 He said: "Yea, (and more),- for ye shall in that case be (raised to posts) nearest (to my person)." 114 They said: "O Moses! Either thou shalt throw [thy staff first,] or we shall [be the first to] throw." 115 He said, "You throw [first]!" When they made their cast, they bewitched the eyes of the people and struck them with awe, for they showed a great [feat of] magic. 116 Then We inspired Moses, saying, "Throw down your staff." And it immediately swallowed up their false devices. 117 ۞ Thus the truth prevailed and what they had produced came to nothing: 118 So the (great ones) were vanquished there and then, and were made to look small. 119 And the sorcerers were cast down, bowing themselves. 120 [and] exclaiming: "We have come to believe in the Sustainer of all the worlds, 121 The Lord of Moses and Aaron." 122 Said Pharaoh: "Have you come to believe in him ere I have given you permission? Behold, this is indeed a plot which you have cunningly devised in this [my] city in order to drive out its people hence! But in time you shall come to know, [my revenge]: 123 I will cut off your hands and feet on the alternate sides and crucify you all." 124 They replied: 'We shall surely return to our Lord. 125 "And you take vengeance on us only because we believed in the Ayat (proofs, evidences, lessons, signs, etc.) of our Lord when they reached us! Our Lord! pour out on us patience, and cause us to die as Muslims." 126
