Samood gave the lie to the apostles 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 143 Have fear of God and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 "Do you think that you will remain here peacefully forever 146 "In gardens and springs. 147 And corn-fields and palm-trees whereof the spathes are fine? 148 Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful? 149 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me; 150 And do not obey the order of the transgressors, 151 Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend." 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 And touch her not with ill lest there come on you the retribution of an awful day. 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 And verily thy Lord! He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
