The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
CONSIDER this unfolding [of God's message,] as it comes down from on high! 1 your companion is not in error nor has he gone astray. 2 nor does he speak out of desire. 3 It is naught save an inspiration that is inspired, 4 something that a very powerful one has imparted to him, 5 and endowed with wisdom; who in time manifested himself; 6 While he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 Then he drew near, then he bowed 8 until he was two bow-lengths away or even closer 9 so (Allah) revealed to His worshiper (Gabriel) that which he revealed (to Prophet Muhammad). 10 The heart lied not in that which he saw. 11 Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he saw? 12 Indeed, he saw him in another descent 13 Nigh unto the lote-tree at the boundary. 14 Near it is the Garden of Refuge - 15 When that covered the lote-tree which covered it. 16 His eye did not waver, nor did it stray, 17 Indeed, he saw one of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 HAVE YOU, then, ever considered [what you are worshipping in] Al-Lat and Al-Uzza, 19 and Manat the third, the other? 20 Why - for yourselves [you would choose only] male offspring, whereas to Him [you assign] female: 21 that, lo and behold, is an unfair division! 22 They are but names, named by you and your fathers. Allah has not sent down any authority for them. They follow conjecture and their soul's desire, eventhough the guidance of their Lord has come to them. 23 Shall man have whatsoever he wisheth for! 24 But it is to God that the Hereafter and this world belong. 25
