A multitude from the ancients. 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 And those on the Left Hand Who will be those on the Left Hand? 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 neither cool nor good. 44 They had been affluent before, 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin (of disbelief). 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day. 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 and drink on top of that boiling water 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower? 64 If We will We can make it like dry trampled hay, so you would keep crying out. 65 (Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing): 66 “In fact, we were unfortunate!” 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 If We willed, surely We would make it brackish. Wherefore give ye not thanks? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
