The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- 2 From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. 3 (Whereby) the angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day whereof the span is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 And not a friend shall ask a friend, 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 and of his spouse, and of his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. 14 But nay! Verily, all [that awaits him] is a raging flame, 15 Eager to roast; 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 And masseth and then hoardeth. 18 ۞ Indeed man is created very impatient, greedy. 19 Very nervous when touched by misfortune. 20 And when good touches him, withholding [of it], 21 Not so are the prayerful. 22 Who are constant at their worship 23 And those within whose wealth is a known right 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 who confirm the Day of Doom 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- 27 Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - 28 those who preserve their chastity 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured. 35
