The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the night when it envelopeth, 1 By the day when it appeareth in glory, 2 By Him Who hath created the male and the female, 3 Verily your endeavour is diverse. 4 Thus, as for him who gives [to others] and is conscious of God, 5 and believes in the finest, 6 We shall ease the way of fortune for him. 7 But for those who are niggardly, horde their wealth, 8 and cries lies to the reward most fair, 9 for him shall We make easy the path towards hardship: 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 It is indeed for Us to show the way, 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 Therefore I have warned you of a Fire blazing fiercely (Hell); 14 [the fire] which none shall have to endure but that most hapless wretch 15 The one who denied and turned away. 16 Far removed from it will be the righteous 17 he that spends his possessions [on others] so that he might grow in purity 18 And who hath no favour from anyone to recompense. 19 But only the desire to seek for the Countenance of their Lord Most High; 20 and the reward (of their Lord) will certainly make them happy. 21
