The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 When their fellowman Saleh said to them, “Do you not fear?” 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 So fear God and follow me. 144 I do not ask any recompense of you for this. My reward is due from none but the Lord of all the worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in this here, 146 Within gardens and springs 147 And cornfields and palm-trees having fine spadices? 148 carving comfortable houses out of the mountains? 149 So fear Allah, and obey me. 150 “And do not follow those who exceed the limits.” 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and reform not." 152 They said: "You are only of those bewitched! 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 He said: (Behold) this she-camel. She hath the right to drink (at the well), and ye have the right to drink, (each) on an appointed day. 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 They slew the she-camel, but later became regretful 157 So the torment overtook them. Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And verily! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. 159
