The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, 6 But We see it very near. 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, 8 and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, 9 And no friend will ask concerning his friend. 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 And his wife and his brother 12 his kinsmen who gave him refuge (from hardship) 13 and all those on earth. 14 By no means! Verily, it will be the Fire of Hell! 15 A remover of exteriors. 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 Who amasses and then hoards. 18 ۞ Verily man is impatient by nature: 19 If evil befalls him he is perturbed; 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 Except the observers of prayer - 22 Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 those who firmly believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 Indeed the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to be unafraid of! 28 And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 And whosoever seeketh beyond that, then it is those who are the trespassers 31 And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. 32 and perform their witnessings, 33 And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
