Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah). 2 And by the even and the odd (of all the creations of Allah). 3 And by the Night when it passeth away;- 4 Indeed in that there is an oath for a man of sense. 5 (Muhammad), consider how your Lord dealt with the tribe of Ad, 6 (And) the tall giants of Iram? 7 The like of whom were never created in the realm; 8 And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale, 9 And with Fir'awn, owner of the stakes 10 [It was they] who transgressed all bounds of equity all over their lands, 11 And made therein much mischief. 12 So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment. 13 Verily, your Lord is Ever Watchful (over them). 14 And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me." 15 But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me. 16 Nay, nay! but ye honour not the orphans! 17 Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 and you devour the inheritance with greed, 19 And you love wealth with immense love. 20 Nay, but [how will you fare on Judgment Day,] when the earth is crushed with crushing upon crushing, 21 and when your Lord appears with rows upon rows of angels, 22 And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)? 23 He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life." 24 On that Day no one will punish as He punishes, 25 And none can bind as He will bind. 26 O soul that art at rest! 27 "Come back to your Lord, Well-pleased (yourself) and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 Join My worshipers and 29 "Yea, enter thou My Heaven! 30
