The Town (Al-Balad)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by yonder city 1 and you are dwelling in this city -- 2 and by parent and offspring, 3 Certainly We have created man to be in distress. 4 Does he think that never will anyone overcome him? 5 He saith: I have wasted riches plenteous. 6 Does he, then, think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and a pair of lips? 9 And pointed out to him the two conspicuous ways? 10 But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep. 11 And what have you understood, what the valley is! 12 (It is) to free a slave, 13 Or the giving of food in a day of privation 14 To an orphan, having relationship, 15 Or a poor man cleaving to the dust. 16 And moreover to be of those who accepted faith, and who urged patience to one another and who urged graciousness to one another. 17 Their place will be on the right hand. 18 And those who disbelieve in Our signs, they are the Companions of the Left Hand; 19 Upon them is a fire, in which they are imprisoned, closed and shut above them. 20
