Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 By the Clear Book. 2 Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. 3 Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom 4 As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending - 5 A Mercy from your Lord, He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). 7 there is no deity save Him: It is He who gives both life and death -- He is your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers, 8 In fact, the unbelievers have doubts because of excessive involvement in worldly affairs. 9 But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke 10 Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. 11 (They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!" 12 How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), 13 Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" 14 Were We to ease the torment for a while, you would still revert to denial of the truth. 15 Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. 16 ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] 17 Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 18 Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. 19 "And truly, I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me (or call me a sorcerer or kill me). 20 If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me." 21 Then he called upon his Lord: “These are a criminal people.” 22 So depart thou with My bondmen by night; verily ye shall be pursued. 23 And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 and sown fields and splendid mansions, 26 And favours amongst which they were rejoicing! 27 Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. 28 And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
