The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the night when it envelopeth, 1 and by the day as it appears radiantly, 2 and by the creation of the male and the female. 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 For him that gives and fears (Allah) 5 And accepts the best, 6 We shall facilitate for him the Way to Bliss. 7 But as for him who is niggardly, and thinks that he is self-sufficient, 8 And gives the lie to Al-Husna (see Verse No: 6 footnote); 9 We will facilitate for him the difficult end. 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance 12 And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning. 13 Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames: 14 None shall roast therein but the most wretched, 15 who belied and turned away, 16 But the God-fearing shall be kept away from it, 17 Those who spend their wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 and confers no favor upon anyone for recompense 19 Other than seeking the glory of his Lord, most high, 20 He will surely be well-pleased (with him). 21
