And certainly We sent Musa with Our communications to Firon and his chiefs, so he said: Surely I am the apostle of the Lord of the worlds. 46 But when he brought them Our signs, at once they laughed at them. 47 even though each sign We showed them was greater than the previous one. We afflicted them with torment so that they might return [to the right path]. 48 And they said: O wizard! Entreat thy Lord for us by the pact that He hath made with thee. Lo! we verily will walk aright. 49 but when We relieved them of the torment, they broke their word. 50 And Fir'aun (Pharaoh) proclaimed among his people, saying: "O my people! Is not mine the dominion of Egypt, and these rivers flowing underneath me. See you not then? 51 Am I not better than this lowly man who can barely express himself? 52 “So why was he not bestowed with armlets of gold? Or angels should have come with him staying at his side!” 53 He (Pharaoh) intimidated his nation, so they obeyed him, for they were a sinning nation. 54 Then when they displeased Us, We inflicted a retribution on them, so We drowned them all together, 55 And We made them a precedent and example to the later generations. 56
