(The tribe of) Thamud denied the messengers (of Allah) 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 I am for you an honest Messenger. 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 For this I demand no recompense from you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 “In gardens and water springs?” 147 And corn-fields and palm-trees whereof the spathes are fine? 148 and that you will [always be able to] hew dwellings out of the mountains with [the same] great skill?" 149 Fear Allah and obey me 150 “And do not follow those who exceed the limits.” 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and mend not (their ways)." 152 They said, "You are only bewitched and insane. 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 (Saleh) said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 "Touch her not with harm, lest the Penalty of a Great Day seize you." 156 So they hamstrung her, and in the morning could only regret. 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 Verily Your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate. 159
