We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his Council, and he said: 'I am the Messenger of the Lord of the Worlds' 46 But when he brought them Our signs, lo, they laughed at them. 47 (Even though) each miracle that We showed them was greater than the other. So We seized them with chastisement so that they may turn back. 48 And they said [to Musa (Moses)]: "O you sorcerer! Invoke your Lord for us according to what He has covenanted with you. Verily, We shall guide ourselves (aright)." 49 But when We removed from them the chastisement, behold, they broke their troth. 50 Then Pharaoh made a proclamation to his people: 'My people, is the kingdom of Egypt not mine and these rivers which flow beneath me? What, can you not see? 51 Aye! I am better than this one who is despicable, and well-nigh cannot make himself plain. 52 “So why was he not bestowed with armlets of gold? Or angels should have come with him staying at his side!” 53 So he made his people unsteady, and they obeyed him; surely they were an ungodly people. 54 When at length they provoked Us, We exacted retribution from them, and We drowned them all. 55 And We made them a thing past, and an example for those after (them). 56
