A multitude from the ancients. 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 and under the shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin (of disbelief). 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 And shall fill therewith your bellies. 53 "And drink Boiling Water on top of it: 54 Drinkers even as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you seen sperm? 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 From replacing you with others or raising you in a way you do not know. 61 And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 If We willed, surely We would make it chaff, so that ye would be left wondering. 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 nay; we have been undone!” 67 See ye the water which ye drink? 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 Did We will, We would make it bitter; so why are you not thankful? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Is it you who have brought into being the tree that serves as its fuel - or are We the cause of its coming into being? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 So glorify your Lord, the most supreme. 74
