A throng of the ancients 39 and a good many of later times. 40 But those of the left hand -- how (unhappy) those of the left hand -- 41 They will be in the midst of scorching wind and boiling water, 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 They were endowed with good things 45 And used to persist in the awful sin. 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day." 50 Then indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers, 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 And filling with it your bellies 53 And shall be drinkers thereon of boiling water. 54 Lapping it up like female camels raging of thirst with disease." 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you seen sperm? 58 Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Is it you who cause it to grow - or are We the cause of its growth? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 (And say:) "We have fallen into debt; 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Behold! the water which ye drink: 68 Do you send it down from the clouds, or We send it down? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme. 74
