(The tribe of) A'ad denied the messengers (of Allah). 123 When their brother Hud said to them: "Will you not take heed? 124 Surely I am a faithful apostle to you; 125 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 126 I ask no recompense of you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 127 Build ye on every high place a monument for vain delight? 128 And seek ye out strongholds, that haply ye may last for ever? 129 and when you strike you strike like tyrants? 130 So fear Allah and obey me. 131 And fear He who provided you with that which you know, 132 Provided you with grazing livestock and children 133 And orchards and springs. 134 for, verily, I fear lest suffering befall you on an awesome day!" 135 They said, "It is all the same to us whether you advise or are not of the advisors. 136 "This is no other than the false-tales and religion of the ancients, [Tafsir At-Tabari, Vol. 19, Page 97] 137 "And we are not the ones to receive Pains and Penalties!" 138 And so they gave him the lie: and thereupon We destroyed them. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 139 And lo! thy Lord, He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful. 140
