The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them: Will you not guard (against evil)? 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 And I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds: 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 amidst [these] gardens and springs 147 farms, and palm-trees in thick groves, 148 carving comfortable houses out of the mountains? 149 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me; 150 Do not obey the orders of the transgressors 151 who corrupt in the earth, and do not reform' 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 "Touch her not with harm, lest the Penalty of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 So the torment took hold of them: verily herein is a sign, but most of them are not believers. 158 And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
