The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 Truly, I am a trustworthy messenger for you, 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in what is here; 146 In gardens and springs. 147 And green crops (fields etc.) and date-palms with soft spadix. 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 Fear Allah and obey me 150 and pay no heed to the counsel of those who are given to excesses 151 those who spread corruption in the land instead of putting things right." 152 They said: thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful." 154 Replied he: "This she-camel shall have a share of water, and you shall have a share of water, on the days appointed [therefor]; 155 "Touch her not with harm, lest the Penalty of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 So the retribution came on them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And indeed your Lord – only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
