a large throng from the ancients, 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 and the shadow of a smoking blaze 43 neither cold nor graceful in shape. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 and constantly said: 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be restored to life? 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Say: "Verily, those of olden times and those of later times 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 "Then moreover, verily, you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)! 51 you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit, 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 It was We who decreed death among you. We will not be surpassed 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 You have surely known of the first creation. Why then, will you not remember! 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 We could turn it, if We pleased, into straw; then you would rue the day, 65 (And say:) "We have fallen into debt; 66 “In fact, we were unfortunate!” 67 Have you seen the water which you drink? 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 If We willed, surely We would make it brackish. Wherefore give ye not thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire that you kindle. 71 Is it you who have brought into being the tree that serves as its fuel - or are We the cause of its coming into being? 72 We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world). 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
