He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 when the blind man approached him, 2 And what would make you know that he would purify himself, 3 Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him? 4 Now as for him who believes himself to be self-sufficient 5 To him dost thou attend; 6 What does it matter to you if he will not become pure (from disbelief, you are only a Messenger, your duty is to convey the Message of Allah). 7 But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, 8 And whereas he fears, 9 From him will you divert yourself. 10 Nay! surely it is an admonishment. 11 and so, whoever is willing may remember Him 12 It is set down on honoured pages, 13 Exalted and holy, 14 (Set down) by scribes 15 noble and purified. 16 Woe to man! How ungrateful he is! 17 From what has God created him? 18 He created him from a living germ. He determined his fate 19 and then makes it easy for him to go through life; 20 Then He causes him to die and be buried. 21 Then when He listeth, He shall raise him to life. 22 Indeed, he has not fulfilled that which He has ordered him. 23 Let man reflect on the food he eats. 24 We let the rain pour down in torrents 25 Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts], 26 then caused the grain to grow out of it, 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 and the olive, and the palm, 29 And dense gardens, 30 And fruits and Abba (herbage, etc.), 31 In order to benefit you and your cattle. 32 So when the deafening Shout arrives, 33 on a Day when everyone will [want to] flee from his brother, 34 Mother and father, 35 And his spouse and his son-- 36 on that Day each will be occupied with his own business, making him oblivious of all save himself. 37 Some faces will shine, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 And other faces, on that day, with dust upon them, 40 Blackness will cover them: 41 Those, they are the unbelievers, the immoral. 42
