Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the dawn 1 and the ten nights! 2 by the odd and even (8th and 9th Dhil-hajj) 3 And by oath of the night when it recedes 4 There surely is an oath for thinking man. 5 Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad, 6 of Iram, known for their lofty columns, 7 the like of which was never created in the countries? 8 And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley; 9 And with Pharaoh of the tent pegs 10 Who terrorised the region, 11 And increased therein the corruption. 12 and therefore thy Sustainer let loose upon them a scourge of suffering: 13 surely thy Lord is ever on the watch. 14 And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me." 15 but when He tests him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Lord has disgraced me." 16 No indeed; but you honour not the orphan, 17 or urge one another to feed the destitute? 18 and you devour the inheritance [of others] with devouring greed, 19 And you love wealth with immense love. 20 Surely when We pound the earth to powder grounded, pounded to dust, 21 And your Lord comes and (also) the angels in ranks, 22 And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him? 23 He will say: would that I had sent before for this life of mine! 24 On that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled. 25 and Allah will bind as none other can bind. 26 O the contented soul! 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased (with him), well-pleasing (Him), 28 "Enter then among My votaries, 29 Enter then My garden." 30
