The Spoils of War (Al-Anfaal)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ They ask thee concerning the spoils of war. Say thou: the spoils of war are Allah's and the apostle's. So fear Allah, and set right the matter among you, and obey Allah and His apostle if ye are believers. 1 The true believers are those who, when Allah's name is mentioned, their hearts quake, and when His verses are recited to them their faith grows, and who put their trust in their Lord; 2 Those who keep up prayer and spend (benevolently) out of what We have given them. 3 Such in truth are the believers: they have grades of dignity with their Lord, and forgiveness, and generous sustenance: 4 The way your Lord caused you, O dear Prophet to come forth from your home with the truth; and indeed a group of Muslims were unhappy about it. 5 Disputing with you regarding the truth after it had been made clear, as if they were being herded towards a visible death. 6 And (remember) when Allah promised you (Muslims) one of the two parties (of the enemy i.e. either the army or the caravan) that it should be yours, you wished that the one not armed (the caravan) should be yours, but Allah willed to justify the truth by His Words and to cut off the roots of the disbelievers (i.e. in the battle of Badr). 7 That He might cause the Truth to triumph and bring vanity to naught, however much the guilty might oppose; 8 [Remember] when you asked help of your Lord, and He answered you, "Indeed, I will reinforce you with a thousand from the angels, following one another." 9 He gave you the good news only to reassure your hearts, for victory comes from God alone, and certainly God is all-mighty and all-wise. 10
