The Companions of the Wood rejected the messengers. 176 Shu'ayb asked them, "Why do you not have fear of God? 177 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 178 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 179 And I ask of you no hire therefor; and my hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 180 ۞ Fill up the measure, and be not cheaters, 181 And weigh with an even balance. 182 And defraud not people of their things, and commit not corruption on the earth. 183 Fear He who created you, and the generations of the ancient' 184 They replied, "You are bewitched. 185 And you are naught but a mortal like ourselves, and we know you to be certainly of the liars. 186 So cause a piece of the sky to fall upon us if you are truthful." 187 He said, "My Lord is most knowing of what you do." 188 But they gave him the lie. And thereupon suffering overtook them on a day dark with shadows: and verily, it was the suffering of an awesome day! 189 Surely, in that there is a sign; yet most of them do not believe. 190 And most surely your Lord is Mighty, the Merciful. 191
