The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him in one Day which will last for fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 while We think that it is near at hand. 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 and no friend will ask about his friend, 10 although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. 14 Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. 15 snatching away the scalp, 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from use)! 18 ۞ Verily man is formed impatient. 19 Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him 20 And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. 21 But not so the worshippers 22 Who persevere in devotion, 23 those in whose wealth is a right known 24 for the needy and the deprived, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - 27 Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- 28 And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 and who preserve their trusts and their covenant, 32 And those who are upright in their testimonies, 33 And those who are attentive at their worship. 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
