The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city 1 And thou art a freeman of this City;- 2 or by the great father and his wonderful son (Abraham and Ishmael) 3 that We have created the human being to face a great deal of hardship. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance! 6 Thinks he that none sees him? 7 Did We not assign unto him two eyes 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And did We not guide him to the two elevated things? 10 But he has not attempted the ascent. 11 And what shall make thee understand that which the steep is? 12 (It is:) freeing the bondman; 13 Or the feeding on a day of hunger. 14 To an orphan, having relationship, 15 Or of a homeless needy person! 16 Then he became one of those who believed, and recommended one another to perseverance and patience, and (also) recommended one another to pity and compassion. 17 These are the people of the right. 18 And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand. 19 On them is fire closed over. 20
