The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
By the night enshrouding 1 and the day in splendour 2 and by Him Who created the male and the female: 3 surely your striving is to diverse ends. 4 Thus, as for him who gives [to others] and is conscious of God, 5 and confirms the reward most fair, 6 We shall surely ease him to the Path of Easing; 7 But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need 8 and have no faith in receiving any reward (from God). 9 Unto him therefore We shall Indeed make easy the path to hardship. 10 And his riches will not avail him when he falls headlong (into the Abyss). 11 Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance 12 and to Us belong the hereafter and the worldly life. 13 Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames: 14 None shall enter it save the most wretched, 15 who rejected the Truth, calling it falsehood and turned his back on it. 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 the Godfearing who spends his wealth to purify himself; 18 and confers no favor upon anyone for recompense 19 Other than seeking the glory of his Lord, most high, 20 surely, he shall be satisfied. 21
