The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city 1 For you (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) are in this city. 2 And by the giver of birth, and whom he fathered, 3 Verily, We have created man in toil. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance! 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue, and a pair of lips?- 9 Have We not shown him the ways of good and evil? 10 Yet he has not scaled the height. 11 And what will explain to thee the path that is steep?- 12 It is freeing someone's neck from slavery; 13 the giving of food upon the day of hunger 14 an orphaned relative 15 or to a destitute lying in dust; 16 And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion. 17 These are the people of the right. 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
