The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come 1 Upon the disbelievers – the punishment that none can avert. 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. 4 So be thou patient with a sweet patience; 5 behold, they see it as if far off; 6 while We think that it is near at hand. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, 9 And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, 10 though they may be in one another's sight: [for,] everyone who was lost in sin will on that Day but desire to ransom himself from suffering at the price of his own children, 11 And his wife and his brother. 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 A fire that melts the hide. 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 and who accumulated wealth without spending it for a good purpose. 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 When evil touches him, impatient, 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 Except those who pray, 22 [and] who incessantly persevere in their prayer 23 who, from their wealth is a known right 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - 28 who guard their privates 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, 32 and perform their witnessings, 33 and are steadfast in their prayers. 34 all these shall live honourably in the Gardens. 35
