The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And the day when it shines in brightness, 2 By (the mystery of) the creation of male and female;- 3 surely your striving is to diverse ends. 4 So he who gives (in charity) and fears (Allah), 5 And affirms goodness, 6 We shall surely ease him to the Path of Easing; 7 but for him that is a miser, and sufficed, 8 And denied the best matter, 9 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery; 10 His wealth will not avail him when he falls into ruin. 11 Surely, it is for Us to provide guidance -- 12 And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning. 13 Therefore I have warned you of a Fire blazing fiercely (Hell); 14 Which only the most wretched must endure, 15 Who denied (the truth) and turned away. 16 One who fears God shall be kept away from it -- 17 Who giveth his wealth that he may grow (in goodness). 18 And no one has done a favour to him, for which he should be compensated. 19 acting only for the sake of his Lord the Most High -- 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
