A multitude of those (on the Right Hand) will be from the first generation (who embraced Islam). 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence, 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 "Then moreover, verily, you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)! 51 "You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqum. 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 And shall be drinkers thereon of boiling water. 54 drink it as the most insatiably thirsty camels drink!" 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Behold! that which ye emit. 58 did you create it or did We? 59 It was We who decreed death among you. We will not be surpassed 60 in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know. 61 And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises? 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 "We are ruined, 66 Indeed, we have been deprived of the fruits of our labour." 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Do you send it down from the clouds, or We send it down? 69 If We willed, surely We would make it brackish. Wherefore give ye not thanks? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
