The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. 3 Whereby the angels ascend unto Him and also the spirit, On a Day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 So persevere with becoming patience. 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 And then the mountains shall become like unto wool dyed. 9 And no friend will ask concerning his friend. 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 And his wife and his brother. 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 And masseth and then hoardeth. 18 ۞ Surely man was created fretful, 19 If evil befalls him he is perturbed; 20 and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him, 21 save those that pray 22 and continue at their prayers, 23 They are those who assign a certain share of their property 24 for such as ask [for help] and such as are deprived [of what is good in life]; 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense 26 and who stand in dread of their Sustainer's chastisement 27 Indeed the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to be unafraid of! 28 And those who preserve their chastity 29 Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; 31 and who preserve their trusts and their covenant, 32 And those who are in their testimonies upright 33 and are steadfast in their prayers. 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
