The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 Arise, and warn, 2 And thy Lord do thou magnify! 3 And your garments do purify, 4 stay away from sins 5 and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return, 6 And for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 Then when the horn shall be blown, 8 That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- 9 for the unbelievers not easy. 10 Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!- 11 And to whom I granted extensive wealth 12 And sons dwelling in his presence, 13 And made (life) smooth for him. 14 And yet he desires that I should add more! 15 By no means! surely he offers opposition to Our communications. 16 I shall soon constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 Lo! He reflected, and determined -- 18 May he be accursed, how he planned! 19 Again, death seize him, how he determined! 20 Then he looked, 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. 23 and said: 'This is no more than traced sorcery; 24 Nothing more than the speech of a man!" 25 I will surely roast him in the Scorching. 26 And what knoweth thou that which the Scorching Fire? 27 It neither leaves, nor spares. 28 Darkening and changing the colour of man! 29 Over it are Nineteen. 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
