۞ [And God will thus command:] "Assemble all those who were bent on evildoing, together with others of their ilk and [with] all that they were wont to worship 22 besides God, and show them the way of hell. 23 And stop them, for they shall be questioned: 24 How is it that you are not helping one another? 25 But they, that Day, are in surrender. 26 And some of them shall advance towards others, questioning each other. 27 They shall say: Surely you used to come to us from the right side. 28 Those say, 'No; on the contrary, you were not believers; 29 We had no power over you. You were a rebellious people, 30 So our Lord's Word is realised against us; we are tasting it. 31 And we led you to deviation; indeed, we were deviators." 32 Therefore, on that Day they will all share Our punishment. 33 Surely thus do We deal with the guilty. 34 They were those who, when it was said to them, "There is no god but God," behaved with insolence, 35 and would say: "Shall we, then, give up our deities at the bidding of a mad poet?" 36 Rather, the Prophet has come with the truth and confirmed the [previous] messengers. 37 Verily, you (pagans of Makkah) are going to taste the painful torment; 38 And you will not be recompensed except for what you used to do - 39 Except the chosen bondmen of Allah. 40 For them is a Sustenance determined, 41 and fruits while they are honored. 42 In gardens of pleasure 43 sitting face to face upon couches, 44 Cups of wine will be presented to them in rounds, from a spring flowing in front of them. 45 delicious to those who drink it 46 no headiness will be in it, and they will not get drunk thereon. 47 Theirs shall be wide-eyed maidens with bashful, restrained glances, 48 so delicate as the hidden peel under an egg's shell. 49 They advance one upon another, asking each other questions. 50 One of them will say: “I had a companion in the world 51 who used to say: -- Are you also one of those who confirm the Truth (of life after death)? 52 After we are dead and have become all dust and bones shall we still be requited?' 53 (A voice) said: "Would ye like to look down?" 54 and then he looks and sees that [companion of his] in the midst of the blazing fire, 55 'By God', he said, 'you had almost ruined me. 56 But for the Favor of Allah I should have surely been among those who were arraigned (with you in Hell). 57 What, do we then not die 58 and that we would not be punished?" 59 Indeed, this is the mighty victory, 60 for the like of this let the workers work.' 61 Is this better as an entertainment or the tree of Zaqqum? 62 Surely We have made it to be a trial to the unjust. 63 It is a tree that comes forth in the root of Hell; 64 and its fruits are like devils' heads. 65 on it they shall feed, and with it they shall fill their bellies. 66 Then they will have on top of it a mixture of boiling water. 67 And thereafter verily their return is unto the Flaming Fire. 68 They indeed found their fathers astray, 69 and they are running in their footsteps. 70 Thus, indeed, most of the people of old went astray before them, 71 And We had already sent among them warners. 72 Therefore see what sort of fate befell those who were warned! 73 Except the chosen bondmen of Allah. 74
