a multitude of the ancients, 39 And a multitude from the later generations. 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 mid burning winds and boiling waters 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 and persisted in the Great Sin, 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 And so will our fathers?" 48 Say: "Verily, those of olden times and those of later times 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 and then, verily, O you who have gone astray and called the truth a lie, 51 you shall eat (the fruit) of the Tree of Zakkum. 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 Drinking the way thirsty camels drink. 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 Then tell Me (about) the human semen that you emit. 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 (Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing): 66 Nay, but we are deprived! 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 See ye the Fire which ye kindle? 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer's mighty name! 74
