The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
CONSIDER the sun and its radiant brightness, 1 And by oath of the moon when it follows the sun 2 By the day when it glorifieth it. 3 And the night when it enshroudeth him, 4 by the sky and how He built it 5 by the earth and that (Power) which spread it out 6 Consider the human self, and how it is formed in accordance with what it is meant to be, 7 And inspired it with the wickedness thereof and the piety thereof, 8 Surely blissful is he who hath cleansed it, 9 and failed is he who buried it! 10 Thamood cried lies in their insolence 11 When the most wicked man among them went forth (to kill the she-camel). 12 The Messenger of God told them, "This is a she-camel, belonging to God. Do not deprive her of her share of water". 13 In response they belied him, and hamstrung the she camel – so Allah put ruin over them because of their sins and flattened their dwellings. 14 for none [of them] had any fear of what might befall them. 15
