The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me: 144 And I ask of you no hire therefor; MY hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 145 "Will you be left secure in that which you have here? 146 amidst gardens and springs 147 The fields of corn and date-palm trees with soft and tender spathes, 148 You hew dwellings in mountains and exult in that. 149 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 150 and pay no heed to the counsel of those who are given to excesses 151 and spread mischief in the land rather than set things right." 152 They said, "You are only of those affected by magic. 153 You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful." 154 He said, 'This is a she-camel; to her a draught and to you a draught, on a day appointed, 155 And touch her not with ill, lest there take hold of you the torment of a Mighty Day. 156 But they hamstrung her and then regretted it. 157 so the punishment came down upon them. Surely in that there is a sign, but most of them would not believe. 158 Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate. 159
