We sent Moses to the Pharaoh and his nobles with Our miracles and he said, "I am the Messenger of the Lord of the Universe". 46 Yet when he brought forth Clear Signs from Us, then lo, they burst into laughter. 47 We showed them Sign after Sign, each greater than its fellow, and We seized them with Punishment, in order that they might turn (to Us). 48 And they said, “O you magician! Pray for us to your Lord, by the means of His covenant which is with you; we will certainly come to guidance.” 49 But when We removed the Penalty from them, behold, they broke their word. 50 And Fir'awn proclaimed among his people, saying: O my people! is not mine the dominion of Misr and witness yonder rivers flowing underneath me? See ye not? 51 “Or that I am better than him, for he is lowly – and he does not seem to talk plainly.” 52 Why have bracelets of gold not been given to him and why have some angels not accompanied him?" 53 So when he had brainwashed his people, they followed him; indeed they were a disobedient nation. 54 So when they angered Us, We punished them, and drowned them all. 55 And We made them a precedent and example to the later generations. 56
