The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Read! In the name of your Lord, who created: 1 created man out of a germ-cell 2 Read, for your Lord is most beneficent, 3 He Who taught (the use of) the pen,- 4 Has taught man that which he knew not. 5 Nay, but man doth transgress all bounds, 6 for he thinks himself self-sufficient. 7 Indeed towards your Lord only is the return. 8 Have you seen one who prevents 9 A slave when he prayeth? 10 Do you think he is rightly guided, 11 or if he commands others to maintain piety!? 12 What will happen if the prohibiting rejects the Truth and turns away from it!? 13 Is he then unaware that Allah seeth? 14 Nay! If he (Abu Jahl) ceases not, We will catch him by the forelock, 15 by the lying forelock steeped in sin. 16 So let him call his associates, 17 We too shall summon the guards of Hell. 18 (Muhammad), never yield to him! Prostrate yourself and try to come closer to God. ۩ 19
