The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen 1 The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- 2 from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So be thou patient with a sweet patience; 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 while We think that it is near at hand. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, 10 though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, 11 his companion wife, his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 Eager to roast; 16 and it will claim all those who turned their backs [on the true faith] and turned away [from the truth], 17 And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. 18 ۞ Indeed man is created very impatient, greedy. 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 And niggardly when good befalls him 21 Except the observers of prayer - 22 Those who are constant at their prayer 23 those in whose wealth is a right known 24 for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, 25 who confirm the Day of Reckoning 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 Verily the torment of their Lord is not a thing to feel secure from. 28 And those who of their private parts are guards. 29 Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; 32 And those who stand by their testimony 33 and who take due care of their Prayer: 34 Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured. 35
