The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ No, I swear by this country (Mecca), 1 And thou art a freeman of this City;- 2 by the begetter, and that he begot, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Does he think then that no one has power over him? 5 He says, “I destroyed vast wealth.” 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways? 10 So he did not quickly enter the steep valley. 11 And what will explain to thee the path that is steep?- 12 (It is:) freeing the bondman; 13 Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine), 14 To an orphan, having relationship, 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 Then he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion. 17 Their place will be on the right hand. 18 As for those who disbelieve in Our revelations, they are the people of the left 19 over them is a Fire covered down. 20
